Private Pesticide Applicators

A private pesticide applicator license is for individuals who apply restricted-use pesticides to produce an agricultural commodity on property they own or lease, or who apply them without compensation on another person’s agricultural property.

License term: 5 years
Application fee: None
Reciprocity: Wyoming does not recognize reciprocal private applicator licenses from other states.

Two Ways to Get Licensed

Attend a Private Applicator Class

Attend an approved UW Extension private pesticide applicator class, pass the exam administered at the class, and complete your license application. These are typically hosted in the spring.

Study & Take the Exam

Study the Private Applicator Core Manual, then schedule a proctored exam through Park County Extension. Exams are offered at our Powell office on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 9:00 a.m. or 1:00 p.m

Taking the exam? The proctored Private Applicator Core exam consists of 50 multiple-choice questions and is closed book. A passing score is required to obtain your license.

After successfully completing the licensing requirements, your application is submitted to the Wyoming Department of Agriculture for processing. Allow time for your license to be issued before purchasing or using restricted-use pesticides.

Commercial Pesticide Applicators

A commercial pesticide applicator license is required for individuals who apply or supervise the use of pesticides as part of a business, government agency, or other commercial operation.

License term: 3 years
New license fee: $25
Exam requirement: Pass the Commercial Core exam and at least one applicable category exam

How to Obtain a Commercial License

1. Identify Your License Categories
Determine which certification category or categories you need based on the type of pesticide work you will perform.

2. Obtain Training Materials
Study the Commercial Core manual and the materials for your selected categories. Printed materials are available through Extension offices, and electronic versions are available through UW PSEP.

3. Schedule Your Exams
Contact Park County Extension to schedule your exams at the Powell office.

4. Pass the Required Exams
Pass the Core exam and at least one Category exam. The required Category exam must be completed within 90 days.

5. Submit Your Application
Your proctor will submit your completed application with the $25 license fee. Allow up to two weeks for your license to be processed.

Didn’t pass an exam? Applicants may attempt each exam up to six times. Contact your proctor for assistance with your options.

UW PSEP offers optional in-person training for new commercial pesticide applicators. The program provides an introduction to pesticide and pest-management topics, but does not replace exam preparation or include the licensing exams.

Renewing a Commercial License

Commercial applicators can renew their license by completing approved continuing education requirements or by retesting. Visit UW PSEP for current recertification options and requirements.
