The Cost of Brucellosis Prevention: Spaying Heifers | ||
Publication #: B-1273 Publication Author(s): |
Description:
In response to recent brucellosis outbreaks, producers are experimenting with management tools to reduce their cattle herds' risk of contracting the disease from free-ranging elk and bison. Spaying heifers is one tool with the potential to help reduce this risk. Although spayed heifers can still contract brucellosis, they cannot spread the disease to others. Therefore, they do not have to be quarantined or tested when a herd is suspected of having brucellosis. They can instead be moved to pasture or sold, as usual, without any costly delays. This bulletin describes the costs of spaying heifers, and discusses the pros and cons of this management tool.
