Description:
Each year there are more and more demands for water by industries, recreational interest, cities and agriculture. The greater the demand for water, definitely a limited resource, the greater the need for irrigators to use available water wisely. Effective water use or wise irrigation water management serves not only to conserve water supplies but, perhaps even more important, to increase production. Farmers and ranchers carefully measure seed and fertilizer for maximum production. Times and amounts of water applied are as important as time of planting and application, and amounts of seed and fertilizer. Good management is taking the guesswork out of irrigation. Combined with prescribed timing for irrigation specific crops, irrigation management involves measuring water at delivery points to determine exact amounts going to the field. There are several devices an irrigator can install for measuring water delivery in irrigation ditches or pipelines. This handbook explains these and also has flow tables for determining the amount of water passing over weir or flume or pipeline water meters.
