Prairie Dog Ecology and Management in Wyoming | ||
Publication #: B-1346 Publication Author(s): |
Description: In Wyoming, prairie dogs evoke a range of opinions and labels as they are both official species of concern and agricultural pests. Consequently, there are many people and groups who are concerned about the management and/or conservation of prairie dogs in Wyoming and throughout western North America. The complexity of prairie dog ecology and management has resulted in highly variable attitudes and concerns from stakeholders that range from the desire to enhance populations to the desire for completely eradicating prairie dogs. As a result, management agencies have had to make difficult decisions about the management of prairie dogs and other wildlife species that benefit from them (i.e. burrowing owls, mountain plovers, and more), while addressing the concerns of the public (i.e. livestock owners). In this bulletin, we will discuss the complex relationship between prairie dogs, humans, and the Wyoming rangeland landscapes they inhabit. Specifically, we will address the following: (1) distribution and populations; (2) behavior; (3) plague; (4) competition with livestock; (5) role of in rangeland ecosystems; and (6) management.
