Are you ready to grow your food business? 

An exciting funding opportunity for local food producers and food businesses is launching in Fall 2024. The Northwest and Rocky Mountain Regional Food Business Center (NWRMRFBC) is distributing funds to eligible entities, with a special focus on supporting historically underserved farmers and food businesses. Wyoming is one of six states in this region and, in partnership with the University of Wyoming Extension, has designed a six-part course as part of the application process for Wyoming’s Startup Business Builder Grants.

WY Startup Business Builder Grants and Market Course Overview

Grant Amounts:

Eligibility: 

Attendance in at least four of the six Market Course sessions to qualify for grant applications.

Registration Timeline: 

Registration for the Market Course opens in November 2024, and the final session enrollment date to be able to attend the final four Market Course sessions is January 24, 2025.

Additional Support: 

The Wyoming RFBC team will provide assistance for the Business Builder Grant application and project planning throughout and after the Market Course. For questions about this program reach out to jennifer.faulkner@uwyo.edu

This course is beneficial for employees working in all aspects of the food manufacturing and service industry.  This course focuses on controlling the 5 Most Common Risk Factors for foodborne illness.  The course will review the importance of proper temperature control, good personal hygiene, proper cleaning and sanitizing, food handling, storage, and information about common foodborne illnesses and how to prevent them.  Questions around state licensing requirements may also be asked during this session.

Melissa Hemken, a Wyoming lead of the NW Mountain Regional Food Business Center, will draw on her first-hand experience selling at farmers’ markets, Food Freedom stores, e-commerce and wholesale to walk you through best practices and considerations for how to package, label and price your local food products.

Improving Product Photography and Building a Website

In this digital era, photography and your web presence are critical skills for every successful business. This course will focus on these two topics. We’ll start by learning how to improve your product photography through real life examples. No fancy equipment is required. Our focus will be on showing you techniques that can dramatically improve your images.
Websites can be daunting to tackle. Where do you even begin? This is the focus of the second part of this course. We’ll start by determining your goals for your web presence. We will examine the different options of web platforms that are available and discuss the pros and cons of several of the popular platforms. Once you’ve determined your goals and picked a platform, we’ll talk about the key steps in creating your site.

This workshop will compare online sales channels for direct-to-consumer sales, as well as payment collection methods and sales tax reporting. Additionally, participants will learn major considerations for liability insurance and risk mitigation procedures.

Devan is an entrepreneur and teacher. Devan launched her consulting career in the public-school system, specifically Special Education. For the past 10 years she operated her own small business, providing consultation and enrichment to families and early educators. Her work with the SBDC began in April 2021, advising small business startups through the first important steps of their journey. Outside of work, Devan loves camping and attending her children’s many sporting events. She enjoys a strong cup of coffee to start the day and a thick steak to celebrate a successful week.

Plants, animals, and people intersect within agriculture. How we eat determines how we utilize landscapes, gather community, and employ ourselves. Melissa Hemken is the Wyoming co-lead of the USDA Northwest and Rocky Mountain Regional Food Business Center. Her broad knowledge of food and agriculture roots in her family’s Iowa crop and livestock farm, swings up into the small-scale farms of New England, travels to ranches across the nation for magazine assignments, and lands on her Melissahof farm enterprise near Lander where she focuses on a hatchery, pastured poultry and gourmet garlic. Hemken holds a BS in Journalism, Environmental Studies and Rural Sociology from Iowa State University, a graduate certificate in Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems from Tufts University, and a MS in Sustainable Food Systems from Prescott College.

Stephanie Styvar is an Area Supervisor for the Wyoming Department of Agriculture, Consumer Health Services. She has been with the department for the past 18 years. Stephanie helps oversee the Manufactured Food Program and Egg Grading Program. Other areas worked include Retail Food, State Meat Program, and Pools and Spas. Stephanie resides in Campbell County with her family and spends her free time raising livestock and supporting her children in their many activities.
Ashley
 Stegeman

 Ashley Stegeman is the Assistant Manager for the Wyoming Department of Agriculture, Consumer Health Services. She has been with the department since April 2021. Ashley helps oversee the Manufactured Food Program and Labeling Requirements for Meat and Manufactured Food Products. She also works within the Retail Food, Dairy, State Meat, and Pools and Spas Programs within WDA. Before working with the Wyoming Department of Agriculture, Ashley worked as an Extension Agent in Utah and North Dakota, coordinated the Agriculture in the Classroom Program for the state of North Dakota, and worked as a Technical Assistant Director for a USDA, Processed Meat Facility. Ashley resides in Cheyenne with her family and spends her free time enjoying the great outdoors, brewing beer with her husband, and supporting her children in their many activities.

Brad has been a professional photographer since 2001. He holds a Photography Degree from Illinois State University. He has been making websites since 2000 (the “wild west” days of the internet). Brad worked for 18 years at the National Outdoor Leadership School. He was their first in-house Webmaster and eventually became their Creative Director in which he managed a team of 13 designers, videographers, writers, and front-end web developers. He currently works as a Freelance Photographer, Videographer, and Web Designer based in Lander,Wyoming.
