Come experience the unique agriculture production found within the Powell Valley area of the Big Horn Basin. We will start this tour off with a visit to the Y-Tex Corporation in Cody, Wyoming. Get the behind the scenes look at Y-Tex ID tags, RFID Tag Systems, Insecticide Tags, horse products and discuss future developments for the livestock industry.

The next stop on this tour will be the Heart Mountain Interpretive Center. The Heart Mountain Interpretive Center is a museum commemorating the World War II Japanese Internment Camp. Explore how these individuals carved a living out of the sagebrush range to produce their own food and have truck farms to Cody. The Park County Master Gardeners have contributed their services to assist the center in researching the plants grown and cultivation practices used during that time period.

The tour will continue on with exploring niche seed markets grown in the Basin. This stop will be at the Powell Research and Extension Center, where we will see the Wyoming State Seed Lab and Wyoming Seed Certification. The Big Horn Basins dry arid climate allows for production of high quality seed, such as alfalfa, native grass seed and more.

Our journey will then investigate the elaborate irrigation system of the Powell Valley. This irrigation system was started in 1905 by the famous Buffalo Bill Cody and his companions. The source for this system is from the Buffalo Bill Reservoir which provides irrigation and drinking water to the Powell Valley area that stretches the width of the Big Horn Basin (Cody to Lovell). This old reservoir provides protection from climate change by storing two years’ worth of water at a time.

The last stop will be to Gluten Free Harvest LLC. GF Harvest, LLC was founded by Forrest Smith in 2003 as a result of a High School FFA project to give back to others on a gluten free diet. With a lot of dreaming, sweat and prayers from all of our family along with the cooperation from the local growers, Wyoming Business Council, City of Powell and the University of Wyoming Research-Extension Center brought this dream became a reality.
