4-H Projects

Laramie County 4-H offers a variety of projects that youth can participate in. There are 6 different categories of project areas. These include:

  1. Animal Science 
  2. Expressive Arts
  3. Healthy Living
  4. Leadership & Civic Engagement
  5. Natural Resources Education
  6. Science and Technology 

Below, you will see the 6 project categories, along with the projects included in each category.

Project List

Animal Science Projects

The 4-H beef project allows you to learn about breeds, selection, grooming, production, management, showmanship, marketing, and careers through a breeding or market animal.

The 4-H cat project helps you explore what kind of cat fits into your family’s lifestyle. Cats need your love and guidance to live long and healthy lives. The project will help you learn about nutritional aspects of a cat’s diet, health needs and practicing responsible ownership.

4-H Dog project members will have fun while learning more about dogs, pet citizenship, feeding, grooming, dog trials, breeds and their importance, over population, sharing a dog with others, health, dog language, community laws and careers.

The 4-H dairy goat project allows you to learn about breeds, selection, grooming, production, management, showmanship, marketing and careers through a breeding or market animal.

The 4-H meat goat project allows you to learn about breeds, selection, grooming, production, management, showmanship, marketing and careers through a breeding or market animal.

The 4-H horse project teaches management, techniques related to nutrition, health, first aid, teeth and aging, in addition to horsemanship, fitting, showing, caring for tack and equipment, horse demonstrations and judging.

In the Llamas and Alpacas project 4-H members learn recommended finishing rations, how to give proper care to animals, and how to use good management procedures.

The Pocket Pet project is for members interested in any pet – frogs, fish, ants, guinea pigs, etc. Pet selection, identification of breeds, parts of the animal, handling, housing, daily needs and health problems are taught.

All poultry projects give members training in the best recommended practices of hatching, brooding, and rearing poultry, marketing, dressing, breeds, egg production, breeding flock, fitting and showing, judging and demonstrations.

In the Rabbit Project members will decide whether they want to raise rabbits for meat, fur, wool, laboratory use, or showing, and select the best breed for the purpose.

In the sheep project 4-H members learn recommended finishing rations, how to give proper care to animals, and how to use good management procedures.

The 4-H swine project helps you learn about swine breeds, health care, production, management, showmanship, marketing and careers in the swine industry.

Veterinary Science Project members learn how to determine the health factors for a normal animal. Members progress to understand animals and their behavior, health and diseases or other problems.

Expressive Arts

Creativity can be a piece of cake with the 4-H Cake-Decorating project! Through this project, you will learn the skills to start making cakes for parties and events. It starts with knowing the basics like simple borders, decorations, and cake molds.

A sweater, an afghan and a hat are all things that can be crocheted. It’s an easy, relaxing art of yarn and crochet hooks that can become an interest that travels with you.

In the 4-H Fabric and Fashion project, you can learn basics like sewing a shirt or putting a zipper on a pair of pants. The advanced units will also teach you how to take the design of your choice and customize it for the perfect look, color and fit.

Being an interior designer is all about making a house a home. But what about just starting in your room? Can you select colors, textures and accessories that will show off your personal style and enable you to take care of your room? It all starts with the 4-H Interior Design project.

The 4-H Knitting project isn’t just for when you are sitting in front of a warm fire, it is a hobby you can take with you! Knitting is a wonderful craft to learn and it can be taken anywhere. In the knitting project, you will learn knitting techniques and tips.

In the 4-H Leathercraft project, you can learn the construction of small leather articles involving carving, stamping and lacing. You can start with simple articles, such as a coaster and learn the skills to advance methods of decorating leather such as filigree and figure carving.

Capture important moments, communicate your perspective, and show how life appears through your lens with the 4-H Photography project. Learn about cameras, lighting, and digital or film media so you can be ready when you find that great shot.

Have you ever wondered the history of a quilt in a museum or one hanging on a wall in your house? The 4-H Quilting project is designed to help you learn about quilts and gain a deeper appreciation of the art of quilt making.

Learn about knots, hitches and bends in the 4-H Ropecraft project. Did you know there are 14 basic skills that can be used in many activities and situations from sailing and climbing to working with animals and decorating.

Do you want to express yourself, be creative, or make an impression? Cutting and pasting, painting, sculpting, drawing, printing, preserving memories, and construction with fibers and other materials are all exciting hands-on activities in the 4-H Visual Arts project.

What’s the 4-H Welding project all about? Joining metal together can be a skill that can help you to repair or create items needed for work. In addition, metal can be joined to create amazing art pieces.

Have you ever wanted to make something with wood? The 4-H Woodworking project is an opportunity for you to create and construct items using wood and woodworking tools.

Healthy Living

If you enjoy cooking or just like good food, the 4-H Foods & Nutrition project could be for you. You will have fun learning the basics of cooking and then advance to gourmet meals. This project focuses not only on food and cooking but also nutrition and using MyPlate to guide eating and meal preparation and planning.

Is your thumb green? Find out how your garden grows in the 4-H Gardening and Horticulture project. You will learn how to plant a garden, dig it, grow it, show it, and eat it.

The 4-H health project will help you explore health and wellness in your personal life as well as your home, club, community, country and world. In this project, you will learn how to assemble a first aid kit and how to treat cuts, stings, bruises and other injuries.

The 4-H Outdoor Recreation project is for those who like hiking and camping! Progress from day hikes, to overnight camping trips and then to extended backpacking expeditions as you hike through the three activity guides and the helper’s guide.

Leadership & Civic Engagement

Discover what is important to you and to other people, set goals, take action and build a stronger community. Through the 4-H Civic Engagement project, youth become active citizens, investigating a public issue, learning about the roles of governing officials, and carrying out a plan to solve a problem.

The 4-H Self Determined project allows you freedom to design a project with skills that are not already offered in a different project.

Life brings many situations where good leadership skills can make a difference: working on a group project in a class, being part of a team, finding yourself with people about to make a mistake, owning your own business or even being an elected leader. Learn to lead with the 4-H Youth Leadership project.

Natural Resources Education

Have you ever chased a butterfly or caught a lady beetle? The 4-H Entomology Project allows you to study and learn about insects, the largest group of animals on earth.

Did you find a rock at the park and don’t know what kind it is? What about fossils? If you would like to learn more about rocks, minerals and fossils, then dig into the 4-H Geology project!

Wyoming is home to some of the most wild and scenic landscapes in North America. Our great outdoor spaces like Yellowstone National Park contain some of America’s most iconic wildlife. Explore the 4-H Nature & Ecology project!

Wyoming has a vast array of rangeland to explore. The 4-H Range Management project allows you to study rangeland plant types and how and where they grow. You can learn more about the habitat and nutritional resources rangelands provide for livestock and wildlife.

The 4-H Shooting sports program gives youth the opportunity to enroll in up to five different shooting sports project areas including: archery, pistol, rifle, shotgun, and muzzleloading.

In the 4-H Sport Fishing project, you can learn to select equipment, choose a place to fish, catch fish, and either release or prepare them for dinner. It will help you understand fish management practices and how they affect fishing.

If you want to learn more about wildlife conservation or wildlife hunting the 4-H Wildlife & Hunting project is for you!

Science & Technology

Think about the excitement that accompanies dreams of sending a rocket into space, making a first solo flight, becoming an astronaut or someday visiting other planets. Blast off with the 4-H Aerospace project!

Through the 4-H Computers project learn about hardware, software and computer applications. Learn how to create networks, domains and workgroups and make decisions about operating systems.

De-mystify the “magic” of electric circuits, magnetism, motors and electronics with the 4-H Electricity project. From building burglar alarms to learning how to select a good stereo and other consumer items.

Exploring the 4-H Robotics project is an ideal way to introduce science, math, engineering and technology while teaching life skills. Through hands-on activities, the 4-H Robotics projects teach basic concepts related to robotic subsystems such as structure, power, sensors, control and programming.
