Bagels

These baked bagels with whole-wheat rival store bought or fried bagels, helping you save money and added calories.

Ingredients
 

  • 2 Tablespoons sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon yeast
  • 1 ½ cups warm water
  • 2 cups whole-wheat flour
  • 1 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon canola oil
  • Nonstick spray

Instructions
 

  • Mix the sugar, yeast, water, and flours together. Add variations below, if desired.
  • Rub the inside of a bowl with oil. Place dough in bowl and flip to coat with oil. Let rise 30 minutes.
  • Preheat oven to 475°F.
  • Punch down dough and divide into 16 balls. Poke a large hole through the middle of each ball with your thumb. Place on a baking sheet coated with nonstick spray and cover with a clean towel or plastic wrap to rise again for 15-20 minutes.
  • Put water in a large pot and heat to boiling.
  • Using a slotted spoon, gently place each bagel into rapidly boiling water for 1 minute on each side. Remove and dry on a clean towel. Place back on the baking sheet. If desired, sprinkle bagels with cinnamon and sugar or salt and seasonings.
  • Bake at 475°F 15-20 minutes. Flip over half way through baking.

Notes

Variations:
  • Apricot Walnut - Add 1/4 cup chopped dried apricots and 2 Tbsp chopped walnuts.
 
  • Cherry Almond - Add 1/2 cup dried cherries and 1/4 cup sliced almonds.
 
  • Cinnamon Apple - Add 2 tsp cinnamon and 1/2 cup grated apple.
