How to Chop Vegetables

Learn how to quickly and safely slice, chop, and mince vegetables.

Ingredients
 

  • 1 zucchini
  • 1 yellow squash
  • 1 bell pepper
  • 1 onion
  • 1 carrot

Instructions
 

  • Cut round vegetables in half. Lay flat side on cutting board. Chop into 1-inch pieces or strips.
  • Chop top quarter of bell pepper. Remove and discard seeds. Remove stem. Chop into 1-inch pieces or strips.
  • Peel onion and cut off top and bottom. Slice in half lengthwise. Lay flat side on cutting board. Slice lengthwise into strips. Turn onion 180° and slice lengthwise to create smaller cubes.
  • Cut top inch of carrot stem and discard. Slice in half lengthwise. Lay flat side on cutting board. Slice into 1-inch pieces or strips.

Notes

Use a sharp chef's knife for best results. Rock the knife back and forth without lifting blade from cutting board. Curve fingers in a straight line against knife back to steady vegetable and avoid cutting fingers. Visit Choose My Plate to learn more.
