Agriculture is alive and well!

Hi Everyone!

This blog is a little different in that it is not just applicable to students, but rather anyone who is involved in Agriculture. I spent the better part of this last weekend helping with corn harvest in Nebraska and I had a lot of time to think about all the changes happening around me.

We are constantly hearing about all of the pressure the University is under to cut costs and meet a budget, similarly Agriculture is facing the challenges of trying to produce quality food for a growing world with fewer and fewer resources. If there is one thing I know though, it is that people in Ag don’t back down from a challenge. From the Dean, Department Heads, Faculty, & Staff in the COANR to the farmers, ranchers, and everyone else involved in agriculture, the challenge of change is accepted and met with the grit and determination needed to overcome.

If you want to see this in action all you need to do is take a tour of the College of Ag or take a drive around the state. Sure there have been cuts made in the college and there are certainly more to come but one thing remains the same, the quality education provided to the students. Similarly, there are changes in Ag around the state like genetically modified crops and innovative genetics and techniques for raising livestock but the end result is the same, quality food for a growing population.

Amongst the changes happening right now at the University and in Agriculture nationwide, one thing has really been made clear; Agriculture is still very much alive and well!

“Agriculture is not crop production as popular belief holds – it’s the production of food and fiber from the world’s land and waters. Without agriculture it is not possible to have a city, stock market, banks, university, church or army. Agriculture is the foundation of civilization and any stable economy.” -Allan Savory
