As young adults we’re supposed to occasionally fail

Jake Zielke

I often see young adults thinking about what they want to become in life, where to go to school, what major they want to pick, and that is incredibly overwhelming feeling. My younger brother just went through this situation picking what school he wanted to attend and ended up picking a major only to realize he hated it. While it seems like the end of the world at the time, that is completely okay. As young adults that’s what we are supposed to be doing, trying things, occasionally failing and learning every step of the way.

Agriculture can be a somewhat scary field to get into, people from an agricultural background might not realize the potential in Ag. People not from an agricultural background might be afraid to try something they have never done and have no experience with. My advice to people in both of these situations is, take a second look before turning away. The opportunity is there, more so than it has been in recent history. The average age of producers is increasing every year because there are less and less young producers coming into the field. Demand for Ag managers is increasingly on the rise, this leaves amazing opportunities for people with or without Ag related experience prior to college. There are tremendous opportunities in internships with companies that train you every step of the way which will almost certainly land you a job immediately out of college.
