Branching Out

What do you think of when you hear the word ‘agriculture’? Cows? Sheep? Corn? Wheat? If these are some of the things you think of you would definitely be right. However, here at UW, the College of Ag is so much more than that. In addition to traditional offerings, the College host programs such as Dietetics, Textiles and Merchandising, Rangeland Ecology & Watershed Management, Microbiology and Molecular Biology. The list goes on and on. I believe this diversity is so beneficial to the College of Ag, allowing for the broad range of perspectives that is acquired from the many different students, staff, and faculty members that call the College of Ag home. Out of this array of studies also arises a variety of opportunities for the students. There is always something to get involved in, whether it is directly related to your major or not, a student here can feel free to explore many different options through research, clubs and activities, and events hosted within the college. In addition, upon recently being able to hear some stories of alumni, I am astonished at the many different ways one can take a “traditional” ag degree and really take it whatever direction you choose. With my major for example, Agricultural Business, there is a history of people having a diversity of careers such as working for major economic and finance organizations as well as in the international operations of large corporations. I feel so lucky to be a part of the College of Ag, and encourage everyone here to explore the many opportunities it has to offer.
