Broadening Your Horizons

As a student at the University of Wyoming you are bombarded with numerous emails each and every day listing internship opportunities, job opportunities, leadership opportunities, and the list goes on and on. My advice to you is to not simply delete those emails but rather pursue some of these opportunities and get involved! This past summer I was fortunate enough to intern with Silver Spur Ranches and it all started with an email I received from the College of Ag & Natural Resources. I attended the initial roundtable discussion for the internship and filled out an application, not entirely sure if interning was the right decision for me. I spoke with several people and was told by some that interning on a ranch would be a waste of time for me since I had already grown up on a ranch and “knew all about ranching”. While I acknowledged that I did already know quite a bit about beef production operations, I couldn’t shake the feeling that this was something I needed to do. With this in mind I interviewed, visited the operation for a second interview, and was offered the position. I accepted the internship and haven’t regretted it for a second! I learned so much from the internship experience, saw some beautiful new places, and made lasting friendships and networks. More importantly this taught me that while advice from professors, family members, or advisors is certainly beneficial, in the end you are the only one who can decide what the right choices are for you. So the next time you get one of those emails from the University just take a second to look at the opportunities available, who knows, it could be a life-changing decision!
