It’s not about the check mark.

For the past 21 years of my life I feel like I have been living my life by a checklist:

Six years of elementary school

Two years of middle school

Four years of high school

In 20 days I will be bringing out another check mark for completing my four years of college. I begin to ponder these past four years, and I don’t want to remember it as a check mark. I will remember meeting some of the most inspirational people that I now call my friends, meeting a handsome cowboy that I now call my boyfriend, receiving a high quality education that I know will come in handy as I pursue a career, gaining valuable work experience through my UW internships, learning what it’s like to be a roommate, strengthening my faith with a loving congregation, being mentored by motivational teachers and advisors, and most importantly finding a passion for implementing my communication skills into the agriculture industry.

College has been a fun chapter in my life and my advice for incoming freshman is to cherish every moment as it comes and find a way to apply what you are learning in class to your everyday life. One tool that I have used to apply what I have learned in class to my life is talking about the topics with my friends, boyfriend, and roommates. I realized that the more I discussed what I was learning in my classes, the more I have retained the information.

Another opportunity that I want to encourage every incoming freshman to take advantage of is the internships provided in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. I received 7 credits from internship opportunities in two years at UW. In result of these internships I learned how to set deadlines, finish projects on time, accept constructive criticism, and meet professionals in the college that quickly became my mentors.

Overall my experience as a student in the University of Wyoming has been extremely positive. The best decision I made was applying to become an ambassador for the college. I have had opportunities to meet high school students interested in attending UW, I have attended the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources advisory board meetings, I have volunteered my time to promote different events happening in the college, and I have made a lot of friends that were fellow ambassadors. My number one challenge I want to leave for all College of Ag students is to apply to become an ambassador!

Because of my experiences here at UW I will be taking a leap of faith after graduation. I plan to start this next chapter in my life cherishing every moment and enjoying life as it comes. On Monday June 2, 2014 I will be moving to Omaha, Nebraska to begin my work with RFD-TV in their social media department. RFD-TV is owned by Rural Media Group (RMG). Rural Media Group, Inc. is the world’s leading provider of multimedia content dedicated to the rural and western lifestyle.

Landing this position with RFD-TV has resulted from all of the experiences I have had here at UW. I am blessed to have the opportunity to apply my education to this work. I have challenged myself, and I challenge all UW students to not live life by a checklist anymore. Have a blessed and safe summer and enjoy life as it comes!
