Getting Involved in College of Ag

When I was a senior in high school, my college plan was to take the classes I needed, do my homework, and graduate in four years. I didn’t think that I would have any free time to be a part of club sports or extracurricular activities; I was here to get my degree and get out! Little did I know how easy and beneficial it is to get involved in anything while at the University of Wyoming.

The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources has a total of 22 clubs and organizations, five Animal Science judging teams, two Rangeland and Watershed Management teams, and two agriculture-related fraternities and sororities that they offer for students to get involved in. Throughout my three and a half years as a student here, I have been involved in four of those clubs – the Wyoming Collegiate Cattle Association, UW Ranch Horse Team, UW Rodeo Team, and Ag Ambassadors. WCCA is a great student group to get involved in, especially if you’re an Ag kid that has an interest in the cattle industry! The Ranch Horse Team is also a great group to be a part of, with or without your horse. I spent the spring semester of my junior year going to practices at Hansen Arena, learning a whole bunch about different ranch horse classes that me and my horse could participate in. I was on the UW Rodeo Team for two years when I first came to Laramie, competing in barrel racing. I learned a lot from traveling all over Wyoming, Nebraska, and Colorado with the team, and will forever cherish the friendships I made.

Last, but certainly not least, the Ag Ambassador group is one of the best, most influential student groups I have been involved with while at UW. This group is a great way to get even more involved on campus by attending recruiting events and promoting the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. As an Ag Ambassador, I have been able to expand my networking, professional, and social skills, as well as meet tons of students, faculty, and community members that have made my time here in Laramie even better.

If you are interested in finding a way to get more involved while in college – look no further: http://www.uwyo.edu/agprograms/clubs.html has a list of all of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources clubs and organizations, and there is something for everyone on there. Go Pokes!
