Takeaways from a graduating senior…

It’s hard to believe my time as an Ambassador for the College of Agriculture and Natural  Resources is coming to an end. With graduation and the “real world” looming, I have been reflecting a lot on my decision to come to UW and be a part of the College of Agriculture. Here are some of the biggest takeaways from my time at UW:
1.      Don’t be afraid of the more challenging classes. If your advisor is encouraging you to take a course that is rigorous, there is probably a good reason. For me, this course was Econometrics. I was not looking forward to taking it, especially since it wasn’t required. However, I am so grateful my advisor pushed me to take this class. Econometrics pushed me to think in different ways and ultimately changed my career and education goals, for the better. I do not think I would be headed to graduate school if it weren’t for my advisor and econometrics.
2.      Take time for self exploration. Since I had a lighter course load this semester, I decided to take an introductory piano class. I have really enjoyed expanding my horizons and trying something completely out of my major.
3.      Office hours are a must. They are a great time to get clarification on concepts from class, homework, or just general life advice. The professors are here to help you. Forming a relationship with your professors really pays off in the long run when you need advice or a letter of recommendation for your dream job.
4.      Apply, apply, apply! If there is an opportunity that you are interested in, apply for it. The worst outcome that could happen is that you don’t get it. There are so many amazing opportunities out there, from internships to research opportunities.
5.      Get involved. Part of the college experience is meeting new friends and exploring new things. There are so many different organizations and activities, both in and out of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, there truly is something for everyone.

I have really enjoyed my time in the college and at the University of Wyoming. I will be forever grateful for the mentorship and help I have received along the way. Here’s to my next adventure.
