Hello and welcome back to another school year. I hope that everyone had a wonderful summer break! As we start to get back into the swing of things, we can start to understand how much free time we are going to have throughout the week. While downtime is very important to maintaining one’s sanity in the midst of college life, there are other clubs and organizations that are available for students to join. The University has over 240 different student organizations, each with different opportunities for students to meet new people and learn new skills. Currently, I am a member of the Club Tennis team, Pre-Veterinary Club, Collegiate 4H club, Ag Ambassadors, and Gamma Sigma Delta Honors society. Looking at the many opportunities, you may think that it is too difficult to get involved with more than one or two organizations, but this could not be further from the truth! Commitments to clubs are generally very flexible, and many clubs try to space out their meetings for every 2 weeks so that their members don’t get too overwhelmed.
In addition to being fun, student organizations help their members to participate in activities and trips that they would not otherwise be available to them. For example, as a member of the Club Tennis team, I have had the opportunity to travel to tournaments in Colorado, Utah, and Arizona. Through these tournaments, I got the opportunity to meet other tennis players from around the country, and develop skills in sport that I will be able to play for the rest of my life. In addition to my travel with the Club Tennis team, my membership in the Pre-Veterinary Club has helped me to visit and tour Veterinary Schools that participate in the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education program that helps students attend professional school out of state while paying in-state tuition. Here we have been able to tour the different schools and actually get a feel for them before applying. Not only that, but we were also able to meet with admissions staff and learn some of the more intricate details of the application process.
While not all clubs undertake activities on this level, there is always something to be gained from participating in a student organization. Below, I have attached links to the list of Ag clubs and organizations, as well as a link to the Campus Activity Center’s main page as well. I hope everyone has a wonderful week!
