Textiles Are My Future

Hi my name is Whitney Taylor and I am part of the Family Consumer Sciences Department with a concentration in Textiles and Merchandising and a minor in Apparel Design. I am a senior in College and I swam for the University for four years. I grew up in Phoenix, AZ and decided it was time to see something new and found Laramie, WY. I miss the hot weather of Arizona, but love Wyoming for the beautiful atmosphere and wonderful people. I enjoy fashion, traveling, and meeting new people. I am always up for adventure and spend most of my free time enjoying the outdoors for trips to snowshoe, climb, or camping and bouldering.

I came into college loving fashion and clothes and have learned more about clothing and textiles then I thought possible. This week I got the chance to dye and paint on clothing. There is a large difference in both processes but it is very exciting to learn about it in my Fiber Arts course. There is an abundant amount of chemistry that goes into the painting application and how certain dyes will dye different fibers and fabrics. My class explored different reactions with products like adding salt to the fabric, which made a very interesting design where the salt reacted with the dye. This class has been very fun to learn more about decorative applications in textiles.

I also went on a study tour this summer to West Europe to Edinburgh, London, and Paris. A group of us toured museums, stores, schools, and had appointments with many different types of people in the fashion industry. It was a very exciting trip to learn more about the textiles department. This trip was my inspiration to further myself in the future to maybe follow my dream of designing. I learned how to work with people from different parts of the world, not to mention encountering my first trip abroad, longest flight, and instilling myself into the culture. It was a wonderful trip to explore individuality and be inspired by such beautiful clothing, environment, and the nature that we passed through.

The Family Consumer Department has given me the chance to create a future after college that I am very excited to explore. The instructors do a wonderful job through out the department and not just in my concentration. I feel that I have grown as a person from my freshman year and got the privilege to make more dreams and realities for my future. The Family Consumer Sciences Department has made a very enjoyable time for me in Wyoming. My major has allowed me to explore my more creative mind and is a difference to me. I would recommend anyone to the Family Consumer Science department if they have a love for people, and are ready to grow as a person to their senior year.
